NCAA: Kenya Airways has paid sanction fee for consumer protection infractions

NCAA summons Kenya Airways' acting station manager over 'maltreatment' of Nigerian passenger NCAA summons Kenya Airways' acting station manager over 'maltreatment' of Nigerian passenger

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) says Kenya Airways has paid a sanction fee for violating Nigeria’s consumer protection laws.

Michael Achimugu, the NCAA director of public affairs and consumer protection, in a statement on Thursday, said the fine was for the mistreatment of Gloria Omisore, a Nigerian passenger.

In February, a video posted by Tunde Moshood, special adviser to the minister of aviation, captured a verbal altercation between a Kenya Airways staff member and Omisore.

Following the altercation, the NCAA announced its resolve to initiate “maximum enforcement action” against the airline for multiple consumer protection violations.

Achimugu said the airline paid the sanction fee on Wednesday for Omisore and other consumer protection infractions.

However, the spokesperson did not disclose the amount the aviation firm paid.

“After a number of meetings, including a visit to the NCAA by the Kenyan High Commissioner to Nigeria and officials from the airline and JKIA, Kenya Airways has, on Wednesday 17/09/2025, paid the sanction fee as penalty for the Gloria Omisore and other consumer protection-related infractions,” he said.

“As always, NCAA sanctions are not to punish operators, but to help improve their flight operations, especially with regards to safety and passenger handling protocols.

“Kenya Airways has a long-standing relationship with Nigeria and we look forward to improvements in their Nigeria operations.

“The sanctions do not diminish the positive aspects of the airline’s operations. This was a case-specific penalty.

“While commending the airline for complying with the determination of the NCAA, we must remind that the timeframe for the resolution of the cases for which this sanction was announced has since elapsed.”

Therefore, Achimugu said the payment of sanction fines does not conclude the issues because the timeframe for resolving the underlying cases had elapsed.

The spokesperson added that the NCAA will follow through, assuring both passengers and airlines of its commitment to protecting their rights and responsibilities.
