The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) says there are presently no cases of Ebola virus disease in the country.

The agency announced the development in public health advisory issued on Saturday following reports of a fresh outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

“There are no cases of Ebola virus disease in Nigeria, as at now,” the advisory reads.

The DRC’s ministry of health had reported 28 suspected cases and 15 deaths, including four health workers, in Kasai Province of the country.

Jide Idris, NCDC director-general, said though Nigeria remains free of the disease, preventive measures have been stepped up and surveillance has been heightened at borders and airports, while health facilities have been directed to strengthen infection prevention and control.

The agency urged Nigerians to maintain good hygiene, avoid contact with persons showing symptoms of unknown infections, and report suspected cases immediately by calling the toll-free line 6232 or state hotlines.

NCDC also advised against non-essential travel to countries with confirmed Ebola outbreaks.

The organisation added that travellers arriving from affected regions who develop symptoms such as fever, diarrhoea, vomiting or unexplained bleeding are to self-isolate and contact health authorities.

The NCDC said it is monitoring the situation closely in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and African regional health bodies.
