The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) says officials foiled an attempt to sneak illicit substances into the Kuje custodial centre in the federal capital territory (FCT).

In a statement on Monday, Samson Duza, NCoS spokesperson of the FCT command, said the incident occurred around 12:45pm on Saturday during a routine search.

He identified the suspect as Njimogu Ikedi, who had “concealed substances believed to be cannabis sativa and other psychoactive drugs in his clothes while trying to visit an inmate”.

Duza said Christopher Jen, controller of corrections in the FCT, ordered the suspect’s arrest.

He said the suspect has since been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for investigation and prosecution.

Jen warned visitors with “ulterior motives” to stay away from the custodial facility, adding that vigilant officers would always uncover such acts.

He also implored the public to support the service in reforming and rehabilitating offenders for public safety.

The interception comes more than a year after a woman was caught attempting to smuggle similar substances into the same facility.

The woman, who confessed that she was sent to deliver the drugs to an inmate in the facility, disguised as a visitor and concealed the substances in food packs.
