Ohaneze, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, has expressed support for President-elect Muhammadu Buhari, urging him not to leave the southeast out of his administration.
Speaking to journalists after a courtesy visit to Buhari in Abuja on Thursday, Ralph Obioha, chairman of the group’s caretaker committee, said the president-elect gave the assurance that he would form an all-inclusive government.
“This is a visit on behalf of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo caretaker committee from the southeast. We have come here to show solidarity with the president-elect and also to ask and to inform him that actually what came up at the last election doesn’t actually reflect the true feeling of the people of the southeast,” Obioha said.
“The Igbo voted with great conviction that we needed the president-elect to commence the difficult part of correcting a battered economy, an impoverished nation; a nation that is drifting, and we are the representative of that body. He assured us that Nigeria is his constituency and that is very reassuring.
“We must humbly and respectfully request that because of the outcome of the election, there is a creation and a feeling of imbalance in the political equation. There must be a tripod in the political equation of Nigeria, but that tripod seems to be missing one leg, and a table with two legs, if it is not truly harnessed well, cannot stand.
“He gave us the assurance that he was going to treat the entire nation as his constituency for all, and we believe him.”
Prior to the March 28 presidential election, Ohaneze had endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan as its candidate in the election.
