Ndubuisi Kanu, a retired rear admiral and pro-democracy advocate, is dead.

Joe Okie-Odumakin, an associate of Kanu, confirmed his death to the PUNCH.

He was said to have died on Wednesday morning after battling an undisclosed ailment.

Kanu, aged 77, enlisted in the Nigerian navy in 1962.

He was appointed military governor of Imo state in March 1976.

He was later transferred to become governor of Lagos in 1977, leaving office in July 1978.

Upon voluntary retirement, Kanu became part of the defunct National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), an advocacy group calling for the return of democracy to Nigeria.

He became a chieftain of the group and was a prominent voice in the agitation for the actualisation of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election MKO Abiola was presumed to have won.
