The Lagos State Emergency Management (LASEMA) has urged residents of the state to dial 112 if they run into anyone trying to commit suicide over the one-month ban on withdrawals by Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox (MMM).
On Tuesday, participants of the Ponzi scheme woke up to see a letter displayed on their pages, Sergey Marvodi, founder of the scheme, explaining that a ban had been put in place to ensure the sustainability of the scheme in the new year.
He said the money of participants would continue to grow in the platform along with their bonuses, which they would be able to cash out as from January 13, 2017.
But the explanation could not assuage the worries of some of the investors who took to social media to rue their losses.
One Deji Leye had called the attention of LASEMA to the possibility of a high rate of suicide as a result of the development.
“Suicide rate set to rise in Lagos, @lasemasocial kindly station officers @ major bridges across the city, MMM DON CRASH!” he wrote on Twitter.
The agency responded by giving out its emergency number.
An estimated 3 million Nigerians invested in the scheme.
