The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has launched ‘Operation Eagle Eye’ in Minna, the capital of Niger, as part of measures to reduce road accidents during the yuletide.
The operation, in partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), is a special exercise conducted during festive periods.
Hajiya Sai’du, head of the Minna operations office, said the initiative is specifically aimed at disaster reduction in the state, adding that the agency will carry out surveillance on major highways to prevent accidents.
She said the exercise includes sensitising motorists and the public on the causes of road traffic crashes.
“The event is also to complement the effort of other response agencies, especially the Federal Road Safety Corp in curbing the menace of road crashes,” she said.
“The operation is also aimed at preventing such occurrence, as well as responding to them anytime they occur, in line with international best practices.”
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, four persons died and 56 were injured in a road accident on the Kaduna-Abuja expressway.
Kabir Nadabo, the Kaduna sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), said the crash occurred at Sabon Sara village, adding that it involved an Iveco trailer overloaded with goods and humans.
