The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) says it is investigating the country’s electricity distribution companies (DisCos) following reports of incidents that led to 38 deaths and 19 injuries during the second quarter (Q2) of 2025.

In its 2025 Q2 report, the commission said none of the generation companies (GenCos) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) recorded casualties, whereas all the DisCos recorded casualties.

“Out of the fifty-seven (57) casualties reported in the quarter, the licensees with the highest number of casualties were Ibadan (11), Kano (10), Benin (5), Eko (5) and Jos (5) DisCos, which represented 19.30%, 17.54%, 8.77%, 8.77% and 8.77% of the total, respectively,” the report reads.

The commission said the DisCos, as it observed in previous quarters, continued to account for the majority of the safety challenges experienced in the Nigerian electricity supply industry (NESI).

Cumulatively, the NERC said they accounted for 100 percent of casualties recorded in Q2 2025, having accounted for 92.98 percent, 93.33 percent and 100 percent in Q3 2024, Q4 2024 and Q1 2025, respectively.

Causes of electricity-related accidents include wire snaps, illegal or unauthorised access, vandalism, and unsafe acts or conditions, according to the NERC.

The regulatory body said it will enforce actions where necessary and continue to monitor accident reduction strategies while promoting health and safety in the NESI.

Additionally, the agency said it holds biannual health and safety meetings, monitors compliance, and oversees accident compensation settlements for fairness and transparency.

The commission also said DisCos generated a total revenue of N564.71 billion in Q2 of 2025.
