Newspaper Headlines: APC wins 15 states, six for PDP as NNPP maintains dominance in Kano

How political parties and their candidates won and lost the March 18 governorship elections dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Nation says the All Progressives Congress (APC) has won 15 out of the 22 states where governorship election results have been declared so far, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won in six states and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in one.

The Punch reports that the European Union has criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for failing to live up to expectations in the electoral process of Nigeria. The newspaper says Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, has announced a 20 percent increase in the salaries of civil servants.

THISDAY reports that Iyorchia Ayu, national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has alleged that INEC and security agencies tried to frustrate the party’s target of winning governorship elections in 20 states. The newspaper says Ifeanyi Okowa, the governor of Delta, said a substantial amount of the state’s present debts were inherited.

Daily Trust reports that Sa’ad Abubakar III, Sultan of Sokoto, has asked Muslim faithful to look out for the moon ahead of Ramadan. The newspaper says Ummaru Nagona, one of the notorious bandits terrorising residents of north-west, has died in an encounter with the military.

Daily Independent reports that INEC has suspended collation of governorship election results in Abia and Enugu states. The newspaper says Ovie Omo-Agege, APC governorship candidate in Delta, has rejected the declaration of Sheriff Oborevwori of PDP as the winner of last Saturday’s election.
