Newspaper Headlines: 20 feared dead in Kogi boat mishap

The commemoration of Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary, alongside President Bola Tinubu’s reel out of his administration’s milestones, permeate the front pages today.

Vanguard newspaper reports Tinubu as saying that “upon assuming office, his administration inherited a near-collapsed economy caused by decades of fiscal policy distortions and misalignment that had impaired real growth”. The paper also reports that the president says his administration took the bold step of ending fuel subsidies and multiple foreign exchange rates to reset Nigeria on the path of sustainable growth and inclusive development.
The Nation reports that Nuhu Ribadu, the national security adviser (NSA), has asked Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and other labour unions not to jeopardise the economy as government works to redirect it. The newspaper says Tinubu, in his speech to mark Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary, spoke on the impact of his reforms, saying his administration has recorded 12 economic milestones.

 

Nigerian Tribune reports that Rashidi Ladoja, the newly installed Olubadan of Ibadanland, says he has retired from politics following his ascension to the throne. The newspaper says scores of bandits have been killed following multiple air strikes launched by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in forests around Babasango, near the Kwara-Kogi border.
Daily Trust reports that 20 people have been reported killed in a boat accident on the River Niger. The passengers were being ferried from Ibaji LGA of Kogi on Tuesday. The newspaper adds that Tinubu has asked Nigerians to refrain from making negative remarks about the country.
The Guardian newspaper reports former president Olusegun Obasanjo as saying that Nigeria faces a looming security crisis unless millions of out-of-school children are given access to education. The newspaper also reports rising insecurity and abductions in the north-central.
Blueprint newspaper reports that Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), has described the death of Somtochukwu Maduagwu, a news anchor and producer with Arise Television, as “tragic and painful”. The paper says Tinubu has mourned Maduagwu. 
THISDAY reports that Tinubu says the tough decisions taken by his administration have provided federal, state and local governments with more resources to support citizens and address development challenges.
