Newspaper Headlines: ADC begins takeover of PDP structures in northern states

Reports on Peter Obi’s declaration of interest in the 2027 presidency race, and fatal accidents across various states, dominate the headlines.

Vanguard reports that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has begun moves to woo high-profile politicians from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in northern states ahead of the 2027 elections. The newspaper says Babagana Zulum, governor of Borno, has dismissed claims that he plans to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the ADC.
Nigerian Tribune reports that ADC leaders reportedly met Labour Party (LP), PDP candidates as the party prepares to challenge APC in Saturday’s Lagos council polls, through a coalition. The newspaper added that Yemi Adaramodu, the senate spokesperson, says the red chamber has not received the certified true copy (CTC) of the federal high court judgment delivered on July 4 in the suit filed by Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, senator representing Kogi central.
The Nation reports that Akpoti-Uduaghan says she will resume her legislative duties in the red chamber on Tuesday. The paper added that Obi, LP presidential candidate in 2023, says he will contest the presidency again in 2027.
Daily Trust reports that the federal government has listed its over 20-year-old Boeing 737-700 business jet for sale through AMAC Aerospace in Basel, Switzerland. The newspaper added that the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has fined MultiChoice Nigeria, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, N766.24 million for “violating the privacy of subscribers and their friends”.
The Guardian reports that the Ogun police command has raised alarm over plans by secret cults to mark their annual ‘777’ celebration across the state. The paper added that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has warned against moves to transfer labour matters from the exclusive to the concurrent legislative list.
The PUNCH reports that President Bola Tinubu has asked the Nigerian Army to remain resolute in the fight against terrorism, insurgency, and other security threats confronting the country. The newspaper added that Access, Zenith, Ecobank, Lotus, and Jaiz banks have met Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) new capital requirements ahead of the 2026 recapitalisation deadline.
THISDAY reports that the ADC says Tinubu’s “sudden reform push” towards food security is not a product of policy but a “scramble for survival”. The newspaper added that Obi said he would not buy a new jet as president, insisting leaders must be ready to die when citizens are dying.
