Reports on discussions regarding a new minimum wage, amid the celebration of Workers’ Day, permeate the frontpages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that the ongoing negotiations for a new minimum wage have reached a deadlock following the inability of the federal government and organised labour to reach a consensus on the issue. The newspaper says the federal government has commenced a 15-day emergency fuel supply to ensure the commodity circulates across the country.

Daily Trust reports that organised labour has urged the federal government to increase the minimum wage to N615, 000. The newspaper says Aliko Dangote, chairman of Dangote Industries Limited, said the devaluation of the naira created the biggest mess for the company in 2023.

The Guardian reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo has tackled Lucky Aiyedatiwa, governor of the state, over N5 billion earmarked in the 2024 appropriation law for the renovation of daycare centres. The newspaper says the Centre for Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) has urged the federal government to adopt a new framework to stabilise the customs duty exchange and foster economic growth.

Vanguard reports that commercial banks in Nigeria closed two million bank accounts in the first quarter of 2024 to comply with directive on the linkage of bank accounts to the national identity number (NIN). The newspaper says the federal government has commenced N2.75 billion compensation to property owners along the “right of way” of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway road.
