Reports on Democracy Day celebration and the detention of Godwin Emefiele, suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, dominate the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers today.
The Punch reports that President Bola Tinubu has promised to reward Nigerians with massive investments in education, power, and healthcare to ease the pains of removal of petrol subsidy. The newspaper says the Department of State Services (DSS) has confiscated Emefiele’s passport.
The Nation reports that the coast appears clear for Tajudeen Abbas to become speaker of the 10th house of representatives. The newspaper reports Tinubu as saying that everything must be done to defend Nigeria’s democracy.
The Guardian reports that pro-democracy activists and groups have advised Tinubu on how to achieve the ideals of June 12. The newspaper says Femi Falana, human rights lawyer, said DSS lacks power to investigate and prosecute Emefiele.
Vanguard reports that school owners are lamenting the impact of removal of petrol subsidy on the management of their schools. The newspaper says Tinubu has been advised to use June 12 as a lesson to drive the country’s development.
Daily Independent reports that APC in Ondo has asked the people of the state to remain calm over rumours concerning the health of Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of the state, saying there is no cause for alarm. The newspaper says Jerry Gana, a former minister of information, said the the annulment of June 12, 1993 presidential election was a tragic mistake.
