Newspaper Headlines: EFCC probes 52 companies over $347bn forex allocation

Reports on President Bola Tinubu’s private visit to France, violent attacks in Mangu LGA of Plateau, and probe of foreign companies, dominate the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is investigating at least $347 billion allocated to companies in Nigeria between January 2014 and June 2023. The newspaper says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) have demanded an explanation to the “private visit” of President Bola Tinubu to France.

Daily Trust reports that a woman simply identified as Zainab was delivered of a baby boy in the open during the recent violent attacks in Mangu town of Plateau state. The newspaper says Lucky Aiyedatiwa, governor of Ondo, has nominated Olayide Adelami, a former deputy clerk of the national assembly, as the deputy governor of the state.

The Nation reports Olayemi Cardoso, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as saying that the apex bank is battling to restore the naira to its real value. The newspaper says the presidency said there is no plan to move the federal capital back to Lagos.

The Guardian reports that endless reviews and amendments of the 1999 constitution cost Nigeria an average of N1 billion yearly. The newspaper says at least 30 people were killed in Mangu LGA of Plateau on Tuesday despite the curfew imposed by the state government.
