Newspaper Headlines: FG begins payment of new minimum wage

The newspapers dwell on a range of hot-button issues from across the country, including floods in Niger state, payment of new minimum wage and government’s efforts to cushion effects of its economic reforms.

Punch says the federal government has started the payment of the new N70,000 minimum wage. The newspaper reports that the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) said oil companies liabilities to the federal government have increased to $6.175bn as of June 2024.
Tribune reports that at least 130 people are suspected to have contracted cholera in Oyo state, with nine cases confirmed. The newspaper says Olusegun Obasanjo, former president of Nigeria, said the rate of immigration is affecting the nation’s health sector.
Daily Trust says flood has displaced 82 communities in Niger state. The newspaper reports that the federal government has decided to mark the October 1 Independence Day on a low key basis due to the mood of the nation.
The Nation reports that Tahir Mamman, minister of education, has insisted that pupils below the age of 18 will not be allowed to sit for the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) tests. The newspaper quotes Yahaya Bello, former governor of Kogi, as saying that he is not afraid of facing trial over the alleged money laundering charge against him.
