Newspaper Headlines: FG pushes for N17.89trn new loans to finance 2026 budget

President Bola Tinubu’s directive on the withdrawal of police officers from very important persons (VIPs) permeates the cover pages of the newspapers.

The Punch reports that the federal government plans to borrow N17.89 trillion in 2026 to fund a widening budget deficit as revenue projections fall sharply below expenditure needs. The newspaper says the federal government is intensifying diplomatic efforts to secure the release of Nigerian soldiers and a C-130 military aircraft currently held in Burkina Faso.
THISDAY reports that Tinubu has reiterated that the directive to redeploy police officers protecting VIPs and very very important persons (VVIPs), as well as ministers, was non-negotiable. The newspaper says Kabiru Turaki, the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said his agenda is to take the party to the grassroots.
