President Muhammadu Buhari’s unveiling of eNaira, a digital currency initiated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.
Apart from the report on eNaira, The Nation says Buhari has asked envoys to steer clear of the country’s “rowdy” politics. The newspaper reports that gunmen invaded a mosque in Niger state, killing 17 worshippers and abducting 18 others.
The Punch reports that government agencies and ministries may start collecting revenues using the newly launched eNaira. The newspaper says the federal government will end the petrol subsidy regime by June 2022.
Daily Independent reports the president’s comment that the eNaira will grow the gross domestic product (GDP) by $29 billion in 10 years. The newspaper says the federal government has ordered security agencies to deal with troublemakers ahead of the Anambra governorship election.
The Guardian reports that the north-west zone has requested that a lion share of revenue allocation should be given to states and LGAs. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has asked the appeal court to order the retrial of Orji Kalu, former governor of Abia state, over N7.1 billion fraud allegation, the newspaper says.
Daily Trust reports that the northern coalition has asked a court to exit the south-east from Nigeria. The newspaper says Kano has demanded one percent in the proposed revenue allocation formula under special status recognition.
