Newspaper Headlines: Former INEC chair Mahmood Yakubu says technology can’t fix all flaws in Nigeria’s elections

Comments by Bala Mohammed, chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on tensions surrounding the party’s convention, defections, and preparations for the 2027 elections pervade today’s newspaper headlines.

The Punch reports that Mahmood Yakubu, former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says technology has improved Nigeria’s elections but cannot eliminate flaws undermining their credibility. The paper reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into two travellers found in possession of undeclared foreign currencies totalling over $6,000 and £53,000 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Terminal 2 in Lagos.
Vanguard reports that the Super Eagles of Nigeria have been forced into an emergency landing in Angola after the team’s aircraft suffered a cracked windscreen mid-air. The newspaper adds that Mohammed, governor of Bauchi, says he has no plans to dump the PDP.

THISDAY reports that a federal high court in Abuja has declined to grant an interim order stopping the PDP from holding its planned meetings and national convention. The newspaper adds that chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum, says “no jupiter” will stop the the parties national convention scheduled for November 15.
