Newspaper Headlines: INEC derecognises Abure-led LP faction, rejects SDP candidates for by-elections

Reports on the suspension of the nurses’ warning strike and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s exclusion of some parties’ candidates from the August 16 by-elections dominate the headlines of the dailies.

 

The PUNCH reports that Saleh Zazzaga, north-central APC forum chair, says dropping Vice-President Kashim Shettima as running mate will not affect President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 victory. The newspaper adds that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied abducting or coercing Bayo Ojulari, GCEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), to resign.
New Telegraph reports that the Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has criticised INEC for excluding its candidates from the by-elections scheduled for August 16. The newspaper says the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has lampooned Umar Bago, governor of Niger state, over the closure of Badeggi FM radio station, describing the move as an attack on press freedom and democracy.
THISDAY reports that Femi Gbajabiamila, chief of staff to the president, has urged northern political leaders to support Tinubu’s second-term bid to consolidate his administration’s achievements. The newspaper adds that the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) says sabotage, not oil firms, caused most Niger Delta spillages in 2024.
The Nation reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) are intensifying efforts ahead of next week’s by-elections in 12 states. The newspaper adds that Philip Pierre, Saint Lucia’s prime minister, has condemned the “denigration” of Tinubu during his visit to the Caribbean country.
Nigerian Tribune reports that the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has suspended its nationwide warning strike, which began on Wednesday, following a virtual meeting of its national executive council (NEC) on Saturday. The newspaper adds that the Lagos State University (LASU) has directed students residing in its hostels to vacate the premises due to a strike by staff unions.
Vanguard newspaper reports that Joe Keshi, former Nigerian ambassador to the United States (US), has urged Nigerians in Ghana to respect laws amid the “Nigeria Must Go” protests. The newspaper also reports that Lucky Aiyedatiwa, governor of Ondo, faces a rift with Tinubu loyalists over a move to merge all pro-Tinubu groups ahead of 2027.
