Newspaper Headlines: Insecurity festers despite Buhari’s December deadline

Reports on the 31 passengers abducted during an attack on the train station in Igueben, Edo state dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Nation reports that Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said his government would be for all Nigerians irrespective of religion and tribe. The newspaper says the cash withdrawal limits placed on individuals and companies by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will come into effect today.
The Punch says soldiers, police personnel and vigilantes are currently tracking the abductors of no fewer than 31 train passengers who were whisked away from the Tom Ikimi Train Station, Igueben, Edo state. The newspaper reports that the federal government paid interests of N4.12tn between 2019 and 2022 on the loans it got from the Central Bank of Nigeria through ways and means advances.
THISDAY reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final list of presidential and national assembly candidates contesting the February 25 polls. The newspaper says the CBN said banks have been authorised to dispense the new N200, N500 and N1000 banknotes through automated teller machines (ATMs).

 

The Guardian reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential campaign council has denied the claim that Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate, has been flown to London from Dubai over an unnamed illness. The newspaper says the Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has asked the federal government to immediately reverse the “unlawful and unjust” increase in electricity tariff.
Daily Trust says despite President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive that insecurity should end in December 2022, insurgents and bandits have continued with their reign of terror. The newspaper reports that Zenith Bank and Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) have suspended international transactions on their naira ATM cards.
