Newspaper Headlines: Lagos monarch dethrones six chiefs for ‘impersonating’ him at LP campaign

Reports on the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the platform adopted by the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general election, dominate today’s newspaper headlines.

Daily Trust reports that troops have killed 10 Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents in the southern Lake Chad region of Borno, near the Nigerian-Cameroon border. The newspaper adds that the Ojora of Ijora and Iganmu kingdom, Oba AbdulFatai Oyegbemi, has dethroned six chiefs for attending the campaign flag-off of the Labour Party (LP) in the Apapa area of Lagos.
Daily Independent reports that President Bola Tinubu has appointed Tanko Al-Makura, former governor of Nasarawa state, as chairman of the governing board of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC). The newspaper adds that Tinubu said his administration is committed to ensuring that everyone feels part of the nation’s development.
Vanguard newspaper reports that the federal government has ended the practice of oil companies holding inactive field licences to meet OPEC, budget goals. The newspaper says the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), led by Mohammed Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto, has expressed concern over the high rate of abductions, killings, ethnic violence, and the resurgence of Boko Haram insurgents in the country.
The PUNCH reports that Bala Ibrahim, a spokesperson of the All Progressive Congress (APC), has dismissed the opposition coalition as “dead on arrival”, while asserting that Tinubu will win the 2027 election. The newspaper says many oil marketers are yet to lower pump prices despite Dangote Refinery’s ex-depot petrol price cut, over fears of potential losses.
Nigerian Tribune reports that a group of concerned leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked members of the main opposition party to join the coalition. The newspaper says a new controversy has erupted in Ondo state over the government’s plan to launch a coroner’s inquest into Rotimi Akeredolu’s death.
The Guardian reports that northern PDP leaders have endorsed the ADC as the preferred platform for the coalition after weeks of strategic deliberation. The newspaper says Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, has again slammed Tinubu’s visit to Saint Lucia, describing it as ill-timed.
THISDAY reports that Muhammad Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero, two Kano emirs, joined federal delegates and family to bury Tajudeen Dantata, the iconic Kano-born businessman, in Madina. The newspaper reports that the ADC platform adopted by the opposition coalition, has appointed David Mark, a former senate president; and Rauf Aregbesola, ex-governor of Osun state; as interim national chairman and secretary respectively.
