Newspaper Headlines: Manufacturers, NLC, reject hike in electricity tariff

Reports of increase in electricity tariff for customers under the Band A classification, permeate the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that manufacturers and organised labour have kicked against the federal government’s 240 percent hike in the tariff payable by electricity users enjoying a 20-hour power supply. The newspaper says the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has warned motorists to observe speed limits when travelling along the extensive section of the newly repaired Third Mainland Bridge.

Daily Trust reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and some civil society organisations (CSOs) have kicked against the new hike in electricity tariff in the country. The newspaper says the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has expressed concerns over the continued adjustments of customs import duty rates which have affected the volume of transactions in the first quarter of 2024.

The Nation reports that the federal government is planning to begin the insurance of domestic foreign currency-denominated bonds. The newspaper says operatives of the Nigerian Navy ship (NNS) Beecroft have uncovered a 400,000-litre capacity diesel bunker at a private residence in the Lekki area of Lagos.

THISDAY reports that President Bola Tinubu has signed the student loan re-enactment bill into law. The newspaper says Christopher Musa, chief of defence staff, said the military men in Okuama community in Delta were legally deployed with a mandate from Tinubu to arrest the killers of their colleagues.
