Newspaper Headlines: Naira remains scarce as banks run out of old, new notes

Reports that commercial banks have run out of old and naira notes dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch says commercial banks are beginning to run out of the old naira notes barely three days after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) declared the old N1,000, N500 and N200 notes as legal tender. The newspaper reports that the federal government has postponed the population census to May 2023.

 

The Nation says the hike in food and petrol prices has pushed inflation to 21.91 percent. The newspaper reports that the hope of ease in the lingering cash scarcity has been dashed as banks have run out of old and new naira notes.

 

Daily Trust says the federal government said no conclusion had been reached on how to lessen the likely impacts of the proposed petrol subsidy removal. The newspaper reports that Nigeria has rejoined the United Nations peacekeeping operations after pulling out due to insurgency.

THISDAY says concerns have heightened over alleged moves by some governors to rig Saturday’s governorship and house of assembly elections. Daily Sun reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate, have withdrawn their new application filed before the tribunal seeking to direct the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to allow them or their agents to participate in the process of sorting out the ballot papers used for the election.
