Newspaper Headlines: NNPC, governors clash over alleged $42bn oil revenue shortfall

Reports on the exit of Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers, and his Osun counterpart, Ademola Adeleke, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), perfuse the frontpages today.

The Punch reports a clash between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and Periscope Consulting, the audit firm hired by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) to examine an alleged under remittance of oil revenue totalling $42.37 billion (about N12.91 trillion) to the federation account between 2011 and 2017. The newspaper says the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained Abubakar Malami, a former attorney-general of the federation, after he failed to meet bail conditions.
The Nation reports that Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the PDP; while Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun, has joined the Accord party. The newspaper says Lateef Fagbemi, attorney-general of the federation, said the federal government secured 860 convictions in terrorism-related cases in seven years.
Daily Trust reports that praises and condemnations have trailed the deployment of troops in Benin Republic by Nigeria. The newspaper says fresh protests have erupted in Numan LGA, Adamawa state, over allegations that Nigerian army personnel killed women during operations to restore order in nearby Lamurde LGA.

The Guardian reports that Nigeria should brace for more shortage of medical doctors as Canada is set to introduce a new policy to help foreign doctors working in the country transition to permanent residency status. THISDAY reports that the NNPC has revealed that its subsidiary, NNPC Exploration and Production Limited (NEPL), recorded its highest oil production of 355,000 barrels per day, the first in 36 years. The newspaper says Vice-President Kashim Shettima said Nigeria’s education budget rose from N1.54 trillion to N3.52 trillion in 2025.
