Newspaper Headlines: NNPC secures N318bn to fund new oil exploration

President Bola Tinubu’s call for reconciliation and unity among the Ogoni, after decades of social and political unrest, permeate the dailies.

The PUNCH reports that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) received N318.05 billion between January and August 2025 for frontier oil exploration. The newspaper says former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has pledged that the interest of the Yorubas will “occupy a topmost place” in his administration’s policies if he is elected president in 2027.
Nigerian Tribune reports that the Kwara police command says two persons, including a policeman, were killed and six abducted in the Patigi LGA bandit attack. The newspaper adds that Oscar Ibru, billionaire industrialist and chairman of the Ibru organisation, has died at 67.
Guardian newspaper reports that Tinubu has posthumously conferred the national honours of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) on Albert Badey, Edward Kobani, Theophilus Orage and Samuel Orage, collectively known as the ‘Ogoni Four’. The newspaper adds that the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) says that its probe into the recent Abuja-Kaduna train derailment at Asham station revealed that poor maintenance and a faulty track switch were key factors behind the incident.
Daily Independent reports that Tinubu has summoned Ibok-Ete Ibas, the immediate past sole administrator of Rivers state, to the State House in Abuja. The newspaper adds that Atiku has reacted to the unsealing of the office of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, senator representing Kogi central.
Daily Times reports that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is proposing mandatory drug integrity tests for drivers seeking licences.
