Newspaper Headlines: Obi won’t be denied right to seek presidential ticket, says ADC

Reports on President Bola Tinubu’s attendance at the eight-day Fidau prayer held in honour of Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the late Awujale of Ijebuland, dominate today’s front pages of newspapers.

 

Vanguard reports that the ministry of education has dismissed claims circulating online about the cancellation of the 2025 West African Examinations Council (WAEC) examinations. The newspaper adds that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has addressed delays over full membership of Peter Obi, ex-Labour Party presidential candidate, and Nasir el-Rufai, ex-Kaduna governor.
The Nation reports that President Bola Tinubu says Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the late Awujale of Ijebuland, assured him of victory at the 2027 polls. The paper says Zenith Bank Plc has been named “Nigeria’s Best Bank” at the Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2025, emerging as Nigeria’s standout performer.
Nigerian Tribune reports that the senate has cautioned Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the senator representing Kogi central, not to return to the national assembly until her suspension is formally lifted. The newspaper says the ADC has denied claims that Peter Obi is ineligible to contest its 2027 presidential ticket.
The Punch reports that the Nigerian Medical Association may shut down medical services nationwide if the federal government fails to meet demands by July 23. The newspaper adds that Nigerians spent $29.29bn on foreign medical care during the tenure of late former president Muhammadu Buhari, averaging $3.6bn annually.
Daily Trust reports that Dikko Radda, governor of Katsina, is involved in a minor road accident on Sunday along the Daura–Katsina road. The paper also reports that the ADC says Nigerians will hold the president accountable for power supply promises if he seeks re-election.
Daily Independent reports that the Police Service Commission (PSC) has asked retired police officers planning nationwide protests over the contributory pension scheme (CPS) to shelve the planned demonstration. The paper adds that Tinubu says Nigeria’s history would not have been completed if he had lost out in the 2023 presidential election.
