The commencement of the presidential screening of the All Progressives Congress after a series of postponements dominated the headlines of Nigerian newspapers.

The Nation reports that Bola Tinubu, presidential hopeful, appeared before the presidential screening panel of the APC. The newspaper says the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Rochas Okorocha, former governor of Imo, over alleged N2.9 billion fraud.

Daily Independent reports that Iyorchia Ayu, the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is under pressure to resign following the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate. The newspaper says the APC presidential screening panel has received a petition seeking to disqualify Tinubu over “questionable educational qualifications”.

The Punch reports that Okorocha asked the court to declare the invasion of his residence by operatives of the EFCC illegal and unconstitutional. Samuel Kalu-Uche, prelate of the Methodist Church, Nigeria, has regained freedom 24 hours after being kidnapped.

The Guardian says Goodluck Jonathan, former vice-president, is currently away in Italy while the APC screens its presidential hopefuls. The newspaper reports that Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, accused some southern governors of betraying regional agreement during PDP presidential primary election.

THISDAY reports that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned Nigeria payment of petrol subsidy may hit N6 trillion in 2022. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it did not act unilaterally in adjusting the timetable and schedule of activities for the conduct of 2023 elections,” the newspaper says.
