The alarm raised by the presidency that some religious and political leaders are planning to overthrow President Muhammadu Buhari dominated the headlines of Nigerian newspapers. The protest of parents of abducted students of a Kaduna tertiary institution at the national assembly also made the headlines.

The Punch reports that Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have slammed the presidency over allegations of a coup plot. The newspaper’s cover picture shows parents of the 39 abducted students of Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Afaka, Kaduna protesting at the national assembly.

The presidency has accused religious and political leaders of plotting to overthrow Buhari, THISDAY reports. The newspaper also says the federal government has pledged to save abducted Kaduna varsity students from execution.

Business Day’s headline says some oil companies have reported “record bumper earnings”, while Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) searches for funds to meet its expected revenue.

The Nation says First bank lost N13.2 billion to bad loans in the first quarter of 2021. The newspaper also reports that the Lagos state government has slammed five sexual offences charges against Olanrewaju James, a Nollywood actor popularly known as Baba Ijesha.

The federal government says kidnapping and banditry are not federal offences, Daily Sun reports. The newspaper also reports that Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president, has suggested that the federal government recalls retired soldiers to help in addressing the rising insecurity.

Daily Independent’s headline says the presidency has been urged to name the groups planning to overthrow Buhari. The newspaper also reports that Ben Akabueze, director-general of budget office, says the country’s spending structure is not sustainable.
