Newspaper Headlines: Reps uncover how agency used N81bn for tree planting

Reports on the escalating coups in Africa, and the remarks of Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), dominate the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that President Bola Tinubu has expressed concern over the rising cases of coups in African countries. The newspaper says the Lagos blue line rail will commence operations on September 4.

 

The Nation says David Umahi, minister of works, said Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo, is free to rehabilitate federal roads in the state. The newspaper reports that Wike has promised to deliver the Abuja metroline in eight months.

 

THISDAY reports that the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has disclosed that its members are groaning in pains as all the major performance indicators in the sector declined in the second quarter of 2023.

Daily Independent reports that the National Pension Commission (PenCom) said the retirement savings accounts (RSAs) of over 41,000 employees have not been credited due to the failure of employers to provide complete documentation. The newspaper says the house of representatives uncovered documents on how the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) allegedly spent a whopping N81.2 billion on planting 21 million trees across 11 frontline states.

 

The Guardian reports that African countries risk financial blockade over rising coups on the continent. The newspaper says Emem Bassey, chairperson of the committee of chief medical directors, said the health sector is facing a manpower crisis as professionals leave the country.
