Newspaper Headlines: Special forces deployed to battle terrorists in Benue

Reports on the killings in Benue state, and the altercation at the north-east zonal consultative meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC), permeate the frontpages.

The Punch reports that an alleged plot to drop Vice-President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate ahead of the 2027 election, has divided the APC.  The newspaper says Nigeria’s major crude grades — Bonny Light, Brass River, and Qua Iboe — have risen above $77 per barrel following Israel’s military strikes on Iran, heightening fears of a wider Middle East conflict.
The Guardian reports that Pope Leo XIV has decried the murder of over 100 residents of Yelewata and Daudu communities, in Guma LGA of Benue state, by suspected herdsmen. The newspaper says APC delegates at the north-east zonal consultative meeting engaged in an altercation over rumours that top leaders of the party are planning to drop Shettima as Tinubu’s running mate in 2027. 
Daily Trust reports that a family lost 23 members in the Benue attacks. Farmers, experts and other stakeholders have criticised calls by the federal ministry of agriculture and food security for prayers and fasting to ensure the successful attainment of national food security objectives.
Nigerian Tribune reports that Tinubu has directed security chiefs to implement his earlier directive to bring lasting peace and security to Benue state.

The Nation reports that special security forces landed in Benue state on Sunday to battle terrorists and halt the spate of killings and other forms of violence across the state. The newspaper says the country’s headline inflation dropped by about 50 basis points to 23.20 percent in May — a second consecutive decline.
