Newspaper Headlines: States to draft new framework for LG autonomy

Reports on the federal government’s decision to auction the 753 Abuja duplexes seized from Godwin Emefiele, former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), dominate the frontpages.

The Punch reports that President Bola Tinubu will review the scorecards of his ministers as his administration enters its mid-term on May 29, 2025. The newspaper says the federal ministry of budget and national planning said state commissioners for budget across the country are calling for the development of a unified framework to guide the implementation of local government autonomy.
Daily Trust reports that BudgIT, a civic-tech organisation, said it uncovered 11,122 projects worth N6.93 trillion that were inserted by the national assembly into the 2025 budget. The newspaper says seven inmates have escaped from the medium security custodial centre, Ilesa, in Osun state.
The Nation reports that David Umahi, minister of works, said all the governors from the five south-east states are backing President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office. The newspaper says the Oyo house of assembly has made a U-turn over a bill initially proposing a permanent chairmanship status for the Alaafin of Oyo in the council of traditional rulers in the state.
The Guardian reports that the monetary policy committee (MPC) of the CBN has retained the interest rate at 27.5 percent. The Lagos state government has said the ban on single-use plastics does not include pet bottles, water sachets and nylon carrier bags with more than 40 micron thickness, according to the newspaper. 
THISDAY reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has handed over the 753 Abuja duplexes seized from Emefiele to the federal ministry of housing. The newspaper says Mohammed Idris, minister of information and national orientation, said Tinubu’s reforms have begun yielding measurable outcomes.
Nigerian Tribune reports that the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has faulted the bill before the house of representatives seeking to make voting compulsory. There was a protest in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, on Tuesday, after a stray bullet from police killed a student who was on his way to writing the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), the newspaper says.
Daily Sun reports that the PDP is embroiled in a fierce internal power struggle which involves three major blocs. The newspaper says gunmen have reportedly killed four persons, including James Akase, former PDP ward chairman, during an attack in communities of Guma LGA and Gwer-West LGA of Benue state.
