Newspaper Headlines: Windstorm kills six, injures 30 in Taraba

Reports on President Bola Tinubu’s speech at a joint sitting of parliament, and conferment of national honours on democracy heroes, permeate the frontpages today. 

The Punch reports that Tinubu on Thursday attracted praises and knocks for the list of honourees he announced as democracy heroes during his speech at the national assembly. The newspaper says anti-government and pro-government protesters held rallies in Lagos, Abuja, and six other states during the Democracy Day celebration.
Daily Trust reports that major opposition parties in the country have criticised Tinubu over his comment about the crisis in their folds ahead of the 2027 elections. The newspaper says nationwide protests against hardship and insecurity failed to take place in many states yesterday.
Nigerian Tribune reports that one passenger survived as a London-bound Air India plane conveying 242 people crashed near the airport in Ahmedabad, a western city in India, on Thursday.
THISDAY says former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar said Nigeria is currently on the edge of a dangerous precipice and creeping towards one-party state. Tinubu has said his administration would not to turn the country into a one-party state, the newspaper reports. 
Vanguard reports that Lekan Abiola, one of the children of the late MKO Abiola, winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 election, said Ibrahim Babangida, former military president, has apologised to the family for nullifying the election.
Guardian reports that a severe windstorm in Garba-Chede, a town in Bali LGA of Taraba state, has claimed no fewer than six lives and left 30 others wounded. The newspaper says massive shortage of blood has left accident and emergency services in dire straits, with several blood banks near empty nationwide.
The Nation reports that the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) said the country produced 97 percent of the 1.5 million barrels of oil per day quota the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) allocated to it in May 2025.
