Emeka Obasi, founder of Our Tomorrow, has called on African youths to rise against environmental degradation with the same fervour the older generations used against colonialism.

He spoke at the unveiling of the organisation in Lagos on Tuesday.

Our Tomorrow, a non-government organisation (NGO) focused on climate change, is focused on advocating the involvement of African youth in galvanising global consciousness to the dire consequences of climate change on the continent.

Speaking at the unveiling, Obasi said African youth must band together to stop the “injustice” from “multinational corporations which are extracting resources without adequate consideration for the environment”.

He added that youths must borrow inspiration from the older generations.

“Our continent is being ravaged by multinational corporations which are extracting resources without adequate consideration for the environment. The youth of Africa must rise up against this injustice and save the environment for our tomorrow,” the 21-year-old undergraduate said.

“Throughout history, every generation of African youths have had to rise up to their challenges. Our grandfathers, including people like Nnamdi Azikiwe, Kwame Nkrumah, Obafemi Awolowo, Ahmadu Bello, Julius Nyerere and Nelson Mandela, fought for the independence of our people from colonialism.

“Our fathers have waged a different type of war projecting the image of Africa by excelling in their various endeavours.

“For me, I believe that saving Africa from the ravages of climate change is the great challenge of our generation. I’m elated to lead that fight, and I’m counting on you as proud African youth to join. I am confident that you will not disappoint.”
