NGO canvases access to digital tools for students with special needs

PAD Her Initiative, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), says deploying technology for students with special needs will assist them in attaining academic excellence.

Speaking at a one-day empowerment programme on Wednesday, Ngozi Ukpai-Okoro,  founder and director of the organisation, said special students must not be left out as digital and technology are defining many shares of life.

The event which was organised to mark the International Day of the Girl Child was held at the Federal Government College Ijanikin, Lagos with the theme “Digital generation inclusive of the girl child”. 

According to Ukpai-Okoro, the workshop focused on empowering women and girls with disabilities through digital literacy, advocacy, and health awareness.

“The objective of the event was to empower and inspire female students with disabilities and raise awareness about the challenges they face,” she said.

“With technology and the digital generation going so far, special students must not be left behind. 

“Technology for them shouldn’t be just hearing about it but to ensure they can access various digital tools and to ensure academic excellence.”

She also called on the government and every stakeholder to support the setting up of the computer centre for the special students. 

On his part, Gabriel Odunsin, programme coordinator at TechSocietal, advised the students to beware of cyberbullying and encouraged them to prevent themselves from being taunted online.
