Osaro Onaiwu, candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), in Saturday’s governorship election in Edo state, has described himself as a problem solver.

Onaiwu said this on Sunday during a debate which Channels Television and Enough is Enough, a civil society group, organised for candidates of the poll.

He cited unemployment as the root cause of insecurity, promising to use sports as an avenue for job creation.

“Unemployment in the land is the root cause of insecurity. Edo state as the heartbeat of the nation is confronted by insecurity. Edo is no longer safe. When you come into Benin at night, the city is totally in darkness, and we have had two successive governments since 1999, but they have been unable to do anything for the people,” he said.

“But as the next governor of Edo state by God’s grace, we have plans on tackling insecurity.  First and foremost, I have the plan of lighting up the streets. Once you are able to do that, the local vigilante outfit will know what is happening in the environment.

“We also have to resuscitate the neighbourhood watch. When we were growing up, we know those who were thieves in our neighbourhood, but today, we don’t know them anymore… I won medals for the state at the age of 17, 18 years. I will use sports to take the youths off the streets… My nickname is solution; I find solution to problems.”

Onaiwu, who was the immediate past director-general of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said he left the former ruling party because the PDP is confused.
