The Niger State Internal Revenue Service has shut branches of eight commercial banks and three other organisations over alleged N456.7 million unpaid tax liability.
On Monday, Mohammed Etsu, executive chairman of the service, said the exercise was carried out in line with the provisions of the relevant tax laws.
According to him, the agency sanctioned Stanbic IBTC Bank for N113.2 million tax liability; Polaris Bank, N74.8 million; UBA, N68.9 million; Union Bank, N47.1 million; First Bank, N45.7 million; Heritage Bank, N31.5 million; Unity Bank N14 million; and GTB N8.2 million.
The revenue agency also closed down the premises of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) Plc in Minna, the state capital, over N45.8 million unpaid tax.
Others include Aloe Vera International Hotel (N3.9 million) and a restaurant (N3.2 million) in the state capital.
Etsu said several efforts were made by the service to enable the defaulting organisations to pay their respective tax liability.
He added that such efforts yielded no positive result.
The chairman warned other defaulters to pay their taxes to avoid having their offices sealed.
