Yusuf Tuggar, minister of foreign affairs, says Nigeria is an example of democratic stability in West Africa amid political turmoil in the region.
He spoke through a statement issued Thursday by Alkasim Abdulkadir, his spokesperson, to mark the June 12 Democracy Day celebration.
Tuggar praised the government for maintaining its democratic trajectory through regular elections, peaceful transitions, and adherence to constitutional norms.
“Nigeria stands as a beacon of hope and stability in the region,” the minister said.

“Our democratic institutions may not be perfect, but they remain resilient.
“In a time when democracy is under assault in parts of West Africa, Nigeria has continued to demonstrate that the rule of law, electoral accountability, and civic participation are essential pillars for long-term peace and development.”
Tuggar’s remarks also come amid ongoing efforts by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to address the wave of putsches in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Niger.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to regional diplomacy, restating that democratic governance must remain central to ECOWAS’ conflict resolution strategy.
“Democracy is not just an internal affair. It is our strategic contribution to regional peace,” he added.
“Our progress strengthens the African democratic project as a whole.”
Tuggar commended President Bola Tinubu for taking the country on a path of “economic recovery and political stability”.

The minister expressed hopes that the president’s reforms will lead Nigeria to a future of shared prosperity.
