Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea sign deal to implement roadmap for gas pipeline project

The federal government says it has signed a joint communiqué with Equatorial Guinea to advance the implementation roadmap for the Gulf of Guinea gas pipeline (GOGGP) project treaty.

In August 2024, President Bola Tinubu and President Teodoro Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea signed an agreement on a gas pipeline for the Gulf of Guinea.

Speaking on the deal in a statement on Wednesday, Ekperikpe Ekpo, minister of state for petroleum resources (gas), said he signed a joint communiqué with Antonio Ondo, minister of hydrocarbons and mining development of Equatorial Guinea, on the project.

“Yesterday, I had the honour of signing a joint communiqué with H.E. Antonio Oburu Ondo, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mining Development of Equatorial Guinea, to advance the implementation roadmap for the Gulf of Guinea Gas Pipeline (GOGGP) Project Treaty,” the statement reads.

“This marks a critical milestone in our shared pursuit of regional energy cooperation, economic development, and industrial growth.”

The minister said Nigeria remains firmly committed to the full implementation of the GOGGP treaty.

“This is more than just a treaty; it is a shared economic vision between two friendly nations,” Ekpo said.

“To ensure effective delivery, we have agreed to establish a Joint Steering Committee and a Sub-Committee on Gas Supply with representatives from both countries, as well as the project developer, Gas Invest Limited/Amitee Global.”

The teams, he said, will lead the incorporation of holding and pipeline companies, gas supply sourcing, and finalisation of the international project agreement (IPA).

“Our roadmap also includes the ratification and deposit of institutional documents with the United Nations, and inauguration of inter-agency committees as provided for in the Treaty,” the minister added.

“I stressed the importance of carrying out this work with transparency, mutual respect, and in accordance with constitutional processes.

“Nigeria stands ready to collaborate fully with Equatorial Guinea to make the GOGGP a reality.”

The minister said the project is not just a political agreement, but a national obligation that holds promise for generations to come.
