Nigeria retains African championship title in women’s wrestling

Team Nigeria recorded ninth consecutive title in women’s wrestling at the ongoing 2020 African championship in Algeria with 6 gold and 4 silver medals.

Odunayo Adekuoroye claimed her 6th African championships gold with an emphatic 10-0 superiority win against Eman Ebrahim of Egypt in the final.

She is now the new world no.1 in the women’s 57kg class.

Blessing Oborududu secured her 10th consecutive African championships gold with an emphatic 10-0 win against Rihem Ayari of Tunisia in the final of the 68kg category.

She is now world no.2 in her category ranking.

Hannah Reuben overpowered Amel Hammiche 12-1 via superiority in the final to reclaim her African title in the 65th class.

While Mercy Genesis beat Egypt’s Nada Mohammed 10-0 via superiority to defend her title in style in the 50kg class, Bisola Makanjuola also defeated Rayane Houfaf 6-0 via pinfall, silencing the fans to land gold in 59kg category.

Esther Kolawole claimed her first senior gold medal at the African Championships with a dominant 10-0 technical superiority win against Dorsaff Gharssi of Tunisia in the final of the 55kg category.

As Nigeria continued their dominance in Algeria, Blessing Onyebuchi, defending champion in the 76kg, settled for silver after going down 9-3 via fall to Egyptian Samar Hamza.

Sunmisola Balogun, in her 72kg class, also settled for silver after battling past Eman Mohamed of Egypt 6-4 in her last round-robin match.

Aminat Adeniyi lost in the 62kg category to defending champion Marwa Amri of Tunisia 2-0 via pinfall in a repeat of last year’s final to win silver.

Bose Samuel also lost to Joseph Essombe Tiako of Cameroon for the second time today, going down 4-1, to settle for silver in the 53kg class.
