Nigeria has been selected as the host of the 2027 African Schools Games.

The announcement was made on Tuesday in Algiers, Algeria.

Nigeria’s bid defeated the proposals of South Africa and Kenya to be named the destination for the second edition of the competition.

The African School Games is a continental competition that features student-athletes aged between 14 and 17.

Reacting to the announcement, Bukola Olopade, director-general of the National Sports Commission (NSC), described the hosting right as “a huge win for Nigeria and the future of sports development on the continent”.

“It is also a reflection of the Renewed Hope Mandate, Nigeria is fast returning to glory as the epicentre for sports excellence in Africa, while simultaneously growing our sports economy and enhancing our international image as a prime destination for global sporting events,” he said.

“In 2027, Nigeria will deliver an unforgettable experience for young athletes from across the continent.”
