Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, former minister of special duties and intergovernmental affairs, says Nigeria needs experienced leaders to restore the country.
Turaki said this on Saturday in a statement to mark Nigeria’s 62nd independence anniversary.
According to him, it is important that Nigerians work collectively towards fixing the country by supporting leaders who have shown commitment to fostering inclusion.
“As we celebrate the commemoration of Nigeria’s Independence from British rule, today, I join leaders across the nation to call for patriotism amongst the populace,” the statement reads.
“It is true that these are trying times where sacrifices have had to be made. However, today, I join all Nigerians to salute the faith and resilience that we have all demonstrated towards the continued unity and future of our beloved country.
“The deteriorating security situation in Nigeria is worrisome; from kidnapping, armed robbery, intra-communal, inter-communal and inter-ethnic clashes, mindless attacks on religious gatherings and farm settlements, and insurgency.
“While some might argue that these crises could be attributed to security lapses, I always say that it is our collective duty to fix our nation.
“This is why, as we prepare for the general elections, we must work together to put an end to these crises by ensuring that we give our support to a leadership that is sincere and fully committed to one Nigeria and the rights and privileges of every single citizen.”
He urged Nigerians to support Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the 2023 general election, adding that what the country needs is leaders who will be committed to all-round development.
“With the present challenges we are facing today, we need a leadership that is forged in the resilient and articulate fire of experience, agility, vision, and charisma to lead us on a journey of restoration; one that will help every man and woman, old and young, to identify our respective roles in making this proud nation great again,” he said.
