A security agent has allegedly shot a middle-aged man while allegedly attempting to disrupt the voting process in Mbube, Ogoja local government area of Cross River. 

Irene Ugbo, Cross River police spokesperson confirmed the incident to TheCable on Saturday. 

The deceased, simply identified as Joe, was said to have been shot dead by an army officer.

Ugbo said Joe was shot because he was distracting the elections at the polling unit.

She added that the deceased was insisting that the All Progressives Congress (APC) must win. 

“Yes, it’s true. What we got was that the man (Joe) was interrupting the elections,” Ugbo said.

“He was seriously causing a scene at the polling unit and shouting that ‘APC must win’.

“He was therefore shot by an army. 

“We are yet to get more details about the situation.” 

NAN reports that Garba Aliyu, commissioner of police in charge of election in the state also confirmed the incident 

However, Aliyu said he was yet to get details of what happened.

On Friday, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) warned against disruptions during the governorship and state assembly polls.

Ahead of the elections, there was heightened tension among political parties and their supporters, fuelling fears of election-day violence.
