A high court sitting in Melaka, Malaysia, has sentenced a Nigerian man to death after convicting him of drug trafficking charges.

Datuk Zulkifli Bakar, the judge who presided over the case, ruled that 35-year-old Abuchi Ngwoke was guilty after the prosecution successfully argued its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The accused was charged with trafficking dangerous drugs methamphetamine type with a net weight of 251.66 grams in Melaka general hospital, Malaysia, in May 2012.

He was charged under Section 39b (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under section 39b (2) of the same act, which carries a mandatory death sentence.

At the point of arrest at a Malaysian airport, Ngwoke was reported to have swallowed the drug, which was later found on examination.

In his court testimony, Ngwoke claimed that he swallowed gemstones in Nigeria before travelling.

However, the court considered that absurd and declared him guilty.
