Journalist gathered at Civic Innovation Lab, Abuja, on Tuesday to campaign for a better welfare.
The event organized by Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism and Coalition for Whistleblowers Protection and Press Freedom (CWPPF) had participants from different organisations in attendance.
At the event, journalists shared their experiences with their employers, and some media houses owing salaries were inducted into the ‘hall of shame’.
Dapo Olorunyomi , Premium Times publisher, who was among the keynote speakers, emphasised the need to improve the welfare of journalist in Nigeria.
He also spoke on how their welfare affects their role in the society.
“The welfare of journalists is very important in our democracy. When they are not taken care of, how do they play their role?” he asked.
“Media will not work if the condition of journalists is not a central factor. Collective bargaining is one of the means to improve the welfare of journalists.”
Chioma Chuka, programme manager of RebootOther speakers advised reporters to continually abide by the ethics of the profession and improve on themselves so as to have a higher negotiating power.
They were also encouraged to identify with relevant associations to get the required support when faced with intimidation and danger.
