The Bradford crown court in United Kingdom has sentenced Chiemka Okoronta, a Nigerian postgraduate student, to 10 years imprisonment for raping a 17-year-old girl.

The rape incident was said to have occured at Okoronta’s residence on March 25, 2025.

Okoronta reportedly lured the stranded teenager to his residence at Bradford after they both shared a taxi from Leeds.

Prosecutor told the court that Okoronta locked the teenager in his toilet before attacking her.

The Nigerian student was arrested after the teenager used a stranger’s mobile phone in Bradford City centre to call 999.

He was charged to court on a three-count charge bordering on rape and causing a woman over 16 to engage in sexual activity. In July, Okoronta was convicted of the three-count charge.

In her judgment on November 3, Sophie McKone, the trial judge, said she was convinced that Okoronta ensured that the teenager shared a taxi with him to rape her at his residence.

McKone sentenced Okoronta to 10 years imprisonment with three years on an extended licence.

In her personal impact statement, the teenager said she has a “sense of relief” over the conviction of Okoronta.

“This incident has turned my life upside down. I have flashbacks of what happened to me, I have nightmares,” she said

“One minute I feel fine and the next minute it all comes back, I get upset and then frustrated and angered by what’s happened.

“I would miss arrangements to meet friends. I usually stay in my room and avoid talking to people. I still don’t like leaving my room at all.”

Okoronta is expected to be deported to Nigeria after serving his sentence.
