Pelumi Olajengbesi, an Abuja-based lawyer, has hailed the nomination of Christopher Musa, former chief of defence staff (CDS), as minister of defence.

On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu nominated Musa as the new minister of defence.

In a letter to Godswill Akpabio, the senate president, Tinubu conveyed Musa’s nomination as the successor to Mohammed Badaru Abubakar who resigned on Monday.

In a statement on Wednesday, Olajengbesi, senior partner at Law Corridor, said the public applause that followed Musa’s appointment barely a month after he was removed as CDS shows that Nigerians want competent hands and technocrats to oversee national affairs.

“It is worth noting that the dismissal of General Christopher Musa as Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), in the first instance, was poorly thought-out; it was a momentary blow to the nation’s terrorism fight which was recording some gains,” Olajengbesi said.

“However, the consolation is that the general has been reinstated – not in army uniform – but as Nigeria Defence Minister.

“General Musa remains one of Nigeria’s finest and blameless military officers. His leadership record as Commander of Operations Hadin Kai in the theatre of war against Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters remains nearly un-surpassing. Nigerians also experienced some relative progress in the fight against insurgency during his time as CDS.

“Such military brainiac deserve to coordinate Nigeria’s defence ministry and strategy against bloody marauders. To General Musa, to whom much is expected of, do not disappoint Nigerians. Citizens expect some drastic changes in the strategies deployed against terrorists. Nigerians expect result, not excuses.

“Also, this is a good time for President Bola Tinubu to rejig his cabinet and let go of benchwarmers. Loyalty to protecting the lives of ordinary citizens should come first before political patronage. Nigerians want results. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
