Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president of Nigeria, has called on Nigerians to be calm, following Tuesday’s bombings in the country, in which many people lost their lives in Borno state and several more were injured in an explosion at the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial campaign rally in Rivers state.

In a statement released by the Atiku media office on Wednesday, the APC chieftain observed that Nigeria’s democracy was on trial. He advised Nigerians that no matter what efforts are applied to the contrary, they should never give up their desire for change.

“Nigerian democracy can and must withstand terror,” Atiku said.

“Whether the terror is from insurgents or from desperate politicians, in the end, democracy must prevail.”

He called for a strong bipartisan signal or approach against those who willing to sacrifice the nation for political gains.

“Our political elders must lift up their voices against violent desperados within their parties, and anyone found guilty should be punished severely and openly,” he said.

Atiku urged Nigerians to remain vigilant especially around this election period, and to report suspicious people or activities to the relevant authorities.
