Semi Ajayi, Super Eagles defender, has received racist abuse on social media after West Brom’s 2-1 loss to Liverpool on Sunday.

The 27-year-old was part of the relegated Baggies’ side that was defeated after a dramatic last-minute header from Alisson Becker, Liverpool goalkeeper.

Taking to his Instagram stories on Sunday night, Ajayi wrote: “Yet again, I come on Instagram to more racial abuse after a game.

“Instagram sort it out.”

The defender is not the only Nigerian footballer who has been subjected to racial abuse on social media in recent months.

In March, Simy Nwankwo, Crotone’s striker also shared screenshots of discriminatory messages sent to him on Instagram after his team’s 3-2 home loss to Bologna.

“We can only hope that more efforts will be put in to ensure the general public and not just footballers feel safe on social media platforms,” the 28-year-old had said.

English football had announced a social media boycott over “response to the ongoing and sustained discriminatory abuse received online” in April.

The boycott held across a full fixture programme in both the men’s and women’s professional game and cut across clubs in the Premier League, English Football League, FA Women’s Super League, and FA Women’s Championship.

The clubs did not post or reply on their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts between April 30 and May 3.
