Nigeria’s women 4×400 meters relay team has secured the berth to represent the country at the Olympic games later this year.
The team, which comprises Nse Imaobong, Favour Ofili, Knowledge Omovoh, and Patience Okon-George, achieved the feat when they breezed a season’s best of 3:26.83s at the Lagos state open athletics championship on Thursday.
The performance sent them above other countries on the World Athletics top list for the Olympic games, with the qualification window set to close on June 29.
The competition was the final opportunity for the team to secure its participation at the Olympics after missing out on the World Relays in Poland last month. They also failed to post the required time at the national trials a few days ago.
However, their male counterparts in the 4×400 meters relay team could not attain the required time to book a place in Tokyo.
The team, which comprises Emmanuel Ojeli, Sikiru Adeyemi, Samson Nathaniel and Chidi Okezie, could only achieve a 3:03.42s which wasn’t good enough to get them into the qualification top list.
In the same vein, Nigeria’s men’s 4×100 meters team also failed to book a place at the games as it could only clock 38.69s below the required time.
