Nigeria’s World Cup opponents rise to No. 18 in FIFA ranking
The Super Eagles of Nigeria dropped a spot down from 51 to 52 in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings released on Thursday — but their World Cup opponents, Iceland, are now at an all-time high of No. 18.
On a brighter note, the three-time African champions climbed two spots up from nine to seven in the continental ranking.
The fortune of Super Eagles’ Group D World Cup opponent, Iceland, has sent a very direct message to Nigeria as they moved up 59 points into the 18th position – an all-time high for the country.
Nigeria’s other group D opponents in Russia, Argentina, maintained their fourth position and while Croatia maintained No. 15.
Africa’s other representatives at the World Cup — Senegal, Tunisia, Egypt and Morocco — are 27th, 23rd, 43rd and 42nd respectively.
Meanwhile, Germany maintained thier number one spot in the world, followed by Brazil.
The top ten world rankings are: Germany (1), Brazil (2), Portugal (3), Argentina (4), Belgium (5), Spain (6), Poland (7), Switzerland (8), France (9) and Chile (10).
